Pay plus payroll costs per worker-hour, including your own time. Use your cost, not your client billing rate.

Your total material cost for this job.

Fuel, mileage, or parking. Exclude labor already counted above.

A share of rent, insurance, and other business costs. Exclude costs already included in labor or materials.

Price the work with your costs in view.

Labor is the total worker-hours multiplied by your hourly labor cost. Add materials, travel expenses, and the overhead allocated to this job once. The result covers these entered costs and your chosen margin; it does not determine what customers in your market will pay.

Price = total cost ÷ (1 − margin ÷ 100)

Worked example

A cleaning job with a 30% target margin

Illustrative amounts in USD, before sales tax. These are not recommended rates or margins.

  1. 4 worker-hours × $25 in hourly labor cost = $100 in labor.
  2. $100 labor + $50 materials + $10 travel + $20 overhead = $180 total cost.
  3. $180 ÷ (1 − 30 ÷ 100) = about $257.14 before tax.

About $77.14 remains above the entered costs. Adding 30% to cost instead would give a $234 price and only a 23.08% margin.

Common questions

Should I enter my billing rate as the hourly labor cost?

Use the cost of the labor, including your own time and any payroll costs you need to cover. Your customer billing rate also covers other costs and profit, so using it here can count those amounts twice.

How do I avoid counting overhead or travel twice?

Enter each cost once. If paid travel time is already in worker-hours, use travel expenses only for costs such as fuel or parking. Add job overhead only for costs not already included in labor or materials.

Does the result include IVU or other sales tax?

No. The price is before sales tax, and the calculator does not select a tax rate or determine taxability. Confirm the applicable treatment separately when preparing your estimate or invoice.
